Nelson, meanwhile, had acquired intelligence that Napoleon’s destination was Alexandria. Again the fate of Europe hung on a spider’s silk because, if he were to catch the vulnerable French fleet in the act of unloading its troops and stores, defeat would be certain.

Napoleon, however, spooked by the close encounter in the mist, had headed north towards Crete and slowed his course. When Nelson arrived in Alexandria, therefore, he was a day too early and left, frustrated, to search elsewhere. The French fleet arrived at Alexandria on 1 July and disembarked entirely unopposed but in total chaos, their unity torn apart by wind and wave.

Within a few days, in the shadow of the Great Pyramids, Napoleon put the Mameluks, a dynasty of slave warriors who had controlled parts of the Ottoman Empire for seven centuries, to the sword. Twenty-nine French soldiers died and 260 were wounded; the Mameluk dead numbered in the thousands.
